The academic elite

"A group of eight old, distinguished and universities in the east, famous for its ivy-covered brick buildings."

- From Answers.com

Brown University. Columbia University. Cornell University. Dartmouth College. Harvard University. Princeton University. University of Pennsylvania. Yale University.

For those who devote themselves to studies in some of the most prestigious U.S. universities, their opinions in these eight schoolsaffectionately known as The Ivy League.

How did the "Ivy League" for his name?

I actually have two explanations for this question.

It is said that the group scored its name from the ivy that grows in the eight universities 'brick buildings, while another story says that if an athletics championship at Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia (which has formed the "Four League' ), the Roman numeral "IV" was used in the league has said - that ifpronounced "Ivy League" was.

No matter the etymology of the concept said, there are some features of these eight academic institutions have in common is that they make eight of the most prestigious universities in the country:

(* From Wikipedia)

All of the Ivy League institutions share some common characteristics:

(A) are among the most prestigious and selective schools in the United States, are always near the top of the school and universityClassifications.

(B) you are in the top one percent of academic institutions in the world in terms of financial resources.

(C), pull top-level students and teachers.

(D), populations are relatively small degree of between 13 700 and 4078 for the Dartmouth College of Cornell University graduate student and small size of the population, 1666-14692 Dartmouth at Columbia.

Also worth mentioning:

(A)Seven of the eight schools were founded in 1865 during the colonial period with the exception of Cornell, which was founded in Ivy League institutions, therefore, account for seven of the nine colleges chartered before the American Revolution.

(B) The Ivy are all located in north-eastern United States and are privately owned and controlled.

(C) Even if many of them benefit from the federal or state governments to pursue funding for research, onlyCornell has been supported academic units, so-called legal universities that are an integral part of the device.

Although the term is used quite freely today means a real Ivy Leaguer, part of an academic institution that is known worldwide for its academic excellence, selectivity and admission academic elitism.
